HIGH levels of pilferage by some council workers has greatly contributed to the non-payment of salaries for Lusaka City Council employees,   Local Government Service Commission Chairperson Ackson Sejani has said.

Mr Sejani during a press briefing said the reason the local authority had delayed to clear its workers was because some workers were pilfering and not submitting revenue to the council. He said some of the people that were complaining were the ones pilfering but were complaining the loudest.“Yes, I can confirm that workers are not being paid but the workers themselves are causing this problem because some workers are stealing from the cancel. But the pilferage will be addressed,” he said.He said some workers were in a habit of duplicating receipts and in the process pocketed the revenue they collected.“Some workers were not remitting revenue which has greatly crippled the operations of the council resulting in the non-payment of salaries,” he said.Mr Sejani said the other reason was that some top management officials were not performing to expectations and that they were failing to meet targets. He said it was unacceptable because government had its best to remove cadres from the streets making it easy for the council to collect revenue.Mr Sejani also said there was need to introduce digital revenue collection in order to avoid pilfering when cash is used.
